Her heart beat in time with the music as it coursed through her body, pounding in her veins. Her body moved around on the dance floor gracefully as the simple blue dress that she had bought for the occasion of her last high school dance twisted and moved around her figure, showing off her curves as she danced happily. Her friends surrounded her, dancing as well, but none could compare to her beauty. No, I am not stating that she was heart stoppingly gorgeous or that she was like Belle in Beauty in the Beast. Her beauty was more natural, yet there was something alluring about her that seemed to attract the strangest of people. Her vibrant blue eyes sparkled in the dim room, the bright rainbow coloured lights reflecting off of them. Her mouth was twisted into a perfect white grin as her long, thigh length blonde hair moved as she moved her body. She grinned happily at one of her friends.
“This is awesome!” She cried. Her friend nodded.
“Too bad it’s the end, uh Amberlin?” Her friend asked. Amberlin sighed and nodded. Suddenly the dancers were at a standstill as the DJ began to speak into the microphone. But Amberlin had already begun shuffling out. She dashed to the front of the line, pushing her way through to the front of the line to get her coat and bag. She manoeuvred around the people, forcing her way through the doors to the outside world. She gasped at the sudden chill that ran down her spine.
“For late may, it sure is cold…” She muttered to herself. Throwing on her hoody, she went onward to walk home. For Amberlin, walking had always been normal. She didn’t live too far from the school so to save her busy parents some time she would often walk home. She pulled her hair back, fluffing it up as her feet moved down the dimly lit street. She felt her mind grow rampant as the only sound that occupied her was the sound of her own high heels clacking against the ground. She sighed, beginning to calm herself down as a presence began to fill the empty space around her.
“It’s all in your head Amberlin… It’s all in your head…” She muttered. She shook her head as the paranoia took over her. She felt the adrenaline pump through her as she dashed down the street, her heart thundering. It wasn’t until she came to the lone street, about fifteen minutes away from her house when she stopped. She sat down, curling into a ball as she moaned, clutching her hair in her fingers. She couldn’t get rid of the paranoia feeling and quite frankly, it was making her sick. She kept getting images of murdered bodies in her head. Then, the smell came. The smell of rotting corpses. She stared upward, tears streaming down her cheeks. What was going on? A sudden chill ran down her spine, causing her heart to stop. The smell of death and sorrow surrounded her causing her heart to pound harder, if that was possible. She felt the world around her freeze as though there was another ice age coming. She stood up slowly as the lights around her burst. She let out a ear piercing scream as she cringed, expecting to be damaged. But the one above her remained in one piece and on. Amberlin stared up at the single light in curiosity. Why was it on? She bit her lip, taking a step forward, but felt her body being pulled backwards. She gasped as she felt the embrace of another holding her tightly against his own papery, smooth skin. She felt a mouth by her neck as a blade was suddenly moved to her throat.
“Good evening, my sweet. Now, what are you doing out on a night like this? Don’t you have a boyfriend to protect you or something?” The voice muttered. Amberlin swallowed hard, recognizing the voice of that of a man’s. She felt her heart beat faster as she recognized no heart beat from the figure. She felt a sharp pain in her shoulder then something warm trickle down her shoulder. She froze in fear.
“My sweet, your blood tastes divine… but I’m in need of something more… satisfying” He murmured, groping her breast. Amberlin reached up and pulled his hand down.
“My boob.” She muttered. She felt a slight movement behind her as if the man were laughing.
“You’ve got a bit of fight in you… that’s good. It’d be to easy if you didn’t” He muttered, pulling his blade across her throat. Amberlin opened her mouth to protest, but was interrupted by the gushing of blood out of her throat and down her chest. She felt him unhand her as her body collided with the ground. She cringed as she felt his hand suddenly grip her tightly, holding her in a bridal position. He smirked, his red eyes examining her blue ones. The man’s lips parted to reveal rows of razor sharp teeth. Amberlin looked up at him, her blood still spilling from her throat. The man leaned forward.
“Calm down, drama queen. You’ll be back up in a few moments. Now. Good night, my dark princess…” He muttered, leaning forward and pressing his lips against hers. Amberlin’s eyes widened as she felt something twist its way down her throat and through her body. Her eyes fluttered shut as she began to lose consciousness from the feeling.
The feeling pulsed through her body even as she awoke on the cold, cement ground. She gasped, reaching up to her neck. The previous wounds had been stitched up as if nothing serious had happened. Amberlin shook her head, standing up.
“I died… didn’t I?” She asked herself. A voice echoed through the room and Amberlin recognized it as the voice from the previous night.
“Yes, you did… well you lost your previous life. I gave you a new one.” He explained. Amberlin turned her head, examining the man now walking towards her. He shook some of the midnight black hair out of his eyes, revealing his majestic ruby red eyes. His mouth was twisted into a demented grin, but despite this, he managed to look glorious still. His pale white teeth glistened in the dimly lit warehouse that the two had randomly appeared in. Amberlin held her head, shaking it as she tried to figure out what was going on.
“Okay, this is a dream” She concluded. The man rolled his eyes.
“Okay. This is a dream. Lets go with that. Then why are you able to control your thoughts and emotions?” He asked. Amberlin shook her head again.
“I’m having a lucid dream.” She stated. The man rolled his eyes, taking her hand.
“Come on. It’s obvious you’re awake. My name is Nightmare, but you can call me master. Now accept your fate and shut up.” He ordered. Amberlin shut her mouth instantly. Nightmare sighed.
“Good. Your rambling was getting irritating. Now, I’m sure you’re still full of questions so I’ll explain what you are to you. You are, what is called by any mortal, a life eater. We don’t really define ourselves with a name so we go by that as well if we were to define ourselves. You feed on memories, nightmares and dreams of people. You can feed on the flesh as well, and its highly recommended. It’s tasty and actually gives you more energy than memories, dreams and nightmares. I wouldn’t recommend nightmares. They kind of taste stale and rotten and tend to linger. They will also linger in your own mind. You will get many abilities, like me, but those will become clear to you over time. No one can ever be certain as to your abilities. So that’s a summary of what you are.” He stated, “Oh. And sex with a human is forbidden and it can and will poison you, the sperm that is. Or the ejaculation… we’re really not sure what it is, but you cannot have sex with the human kind.”
Amberlin nodded slowly.
“So what you’re saying is I’m a monster?” She asked. Nightmare’s smile spread even further.
“Yes. That’s exactly what you are. A monster. Now. I’m sure this is still a lot for you to take in, so why don’t you lay down and Nightmare will take care of you…” He muttered. Amberlin stared at him, confused and slightly nervous.
“W-what?” She asked, “But I just got up”
Nightmare shook his head, placing a hand on his hip.
“Look. I just went through all the trouble to turn you into one of my kind. Now you could show me a bit of respect by laying down” He stated. Amberlin’s face turned bright red.
“Wait- are you trying to-” She started, but was once again interrupted by Nightmare.
“What? Have sex with you? Why? Is that what you want?” He asked, pausing for a moment to laugh at Amberlin’s reaction, “Because then, yes. That is what I’m trying to do.”
Amberlin froze as she stared at Nightmare, her mouth dropped open. She quickly shook her head.
“N-no! No, I can’t!” She cried. Nightmare rolled his eyes.
“Oh great. I got the innocent virgin girl. Come on. I went through all of that to make you like me and that takes a lot of effort.” He stated, gently tugging on a lock of her hair, “ Now. Shut up and sleep with me.”
Amberlin leapt away.
“No! I’m saving myself for my boyfriend!” She wailed. Nightmare clicked his tongue.
“I knew this was a mistake. I could have gone to a whore bar and taken any of those women, but no. I chose you because, I don’t know, I thought you’d take pity on someone like me who’s been living alone for over 1000 years.” He ranted. Amberlin rolled her eyes.
“You know, I’d feel really bad for you if that whole speech wasn’t about wanting to bang me.” She snarled, turning away.
“Wait.” Nightmare ordered. Amberlin felt her body turn and walk back to Nightmare, despite her efforts to leave. Nightmare sighed.
“Don’t worry. I won’t rape you. I’m at least that much considerate, and merciful towards women. But if you leave you will starve. So I wont let you.” He explained calmly. Amberlin stared at him, admiration encircling her eyes as a slightly shocked expression crossed her face from his sudden kindness. The expression quickly disintegrated as Nightmare continued.
“Besides, If you die, It’d be a waste of a perfectly good Life Eater and I’d get in shit for it.” Nightmare stated. Amberlin felt as though an eighty-ton weight dropped onto her head.
“So he is just looking out for himself” She thought. Nightmare smirked, holding out one hand.
“So Amby, will you be my servant for eternity if in turn I teach you the ways of a life eater?” He asked, holding out one hand towards her. Amberlin stared at the hand suspiciously.
“If I accept does that mean I have to sleep with you?” She asked. Nightmare shoved his hand back in the pocket of his black pants. He rolled his eyes.
“Uh yeah. You’re my slave.” He stated. Amberlin turned away again.
“Then there’s no way in hell.” She snarled. Nightmare clicked his tongue.
“Oh, come on. You’ll die and return to what you truly are if you don’t. A corpse. We need each other.” He stated. Amberlin shook her head.
“No. I need food. You want my body. There’s a difference.” She said calmly. Nightmare sighed.
“Fine. A deal then. I’ll give you one year to penetrate my mind. That’s a given ability to life eaters. We all have it. If you can catch me off guard and get my true full name through that in one human year, then I’ll set you free and you can go be an innocent virgin. If you can’t, how ever, you will be mine for all eternity. And you have to satisfy me.” He stated. Amberlin thought for a moment, then nodded.
“Deal.” She stated. Nightmare threw back his head, laughing.
“Wow. You accepted. You realize that this is a devil’s bargain?” He asked. Amberlin smirked.
“Right. Just wait until I get your name, Nightmare.” She stated, walking away. Nightmare smirked, following her silently.
“the reason why I picked that time frame, stupid girl,” he thought, “is because it’s a shorter time frame than I took to gain my ability. And you can’t out do a prince.”
“Amby. Come on, lets go hunting.” He called. Amberlin nodded.
“Okay… but no eating people, please.” She said calmly. Nightmare sighed.
“Fine. I’ll teach you basic mind walking so you can feed on a memory.” He said. Amberlin shook her head.
“No. I don’t want a memory. I want a nightmare.” She stated. Nightmare stared at her, shocked.
“You want a nightmare?” He asked, repeating her statement. Amberlin nodded calmly.
“Yes. It won’t hurt anyone. In fact, it will make their life better. I don’t want to hurt anyone…” She said, her voice trailing off. Nightmare smacked his forehead.
“I knew I should have gone after someone else. Well then, Amby the innocent, lets go before you start to die.” He moaned, moving onward. Amberlin followed behind him cheerfully while Nightmare began to mentally kick himself.
“you always pick the wrong people, don’t you nightmare.” He thought to himself. He gripped Amberlin’s wrist as he moved ahead, faster than the average person. Amberlin watched as she too moved at this pace, the world speeding past her as if it was on fast forward and they were walking normally. She cringed as Nightmare tugged a bit harder.
“Come on. Your pulse is getting fainter. I know you’re hungry” He stated. Amberlin stared at him curiously.
“M-my pulse?” She asked. Nightmare nodded.
“Everyone has a pulse, even if you can’t feel it. You’ll realize it sooner or later.” He explained, stopping suddenly. Amberlin stopped, her head colliding with his back. He stared at the woman walking down the street quietly, her boyfriend next to her.
“Amby, here’s our chance. You can go for the girl, but try to remove all memories of the boyfriend.” He muttered, his lips curling into a small grin. Amberlin stared at him nervously.
“are you going to-” She started, but her question was answered by Nightmare’s teeth suddenly growing larger and sharper. He glanced at Amberlin.
“You go first. I want to make sure she’s unconscious so that you don’t over stuff yourself and get fat. I don’t like fat girls” He snarled, his voice becoming low and demented. She glared at him, her eyes turning a white colour.
“I wont get fat.” She hissed, her hunger getting the best of her. She felt her body changing as her pupils turned into slits. Her outfit had changed from her previous blood stained teenager-type spring dress to a long blood red mermaid gown. Her nails grew long and more animalistic as her teeth became sharp and jagged, though not as monstrous as Nightmare. She then began to act on instincts. She leapt up onto the woman, biting her neck. She tasted a bit of blood, then she tasted something sweet, like candy. Images of love filtered through her mind. She saw how much the woman loved the man and everything they had done together. She felt her heart beat in time with the woman’s own terrible rhythm. She pulled back suddenly, tears striking her eyes. She shook her head quickly as she turned back into her regular self.
“I-I can’t!” She wailed as her heart pounded heavily. She stared at her chest, confused. Nightmare looked over at her, wiping a dribble of blood from his mouth. He smirked.
“Well, I could eat her boyfriend as if it were nothing.” He said calmly, licking his fingers, “and if you don’t, she’ll be an easy target.”
Amberlin cringed as the tears flowed down miserably. She stared at the girl, now unconscious.
“I-I can’t…” She said gently, turning away. Nightmare sighed, staring at the girl.
“Well, if you don’t want to feed anymore, I can’t force you. Come on, lets keep moving…” He muttered. Nightmare gripped her wrist once again, “Lets go, Amby.”
Amberlin stared at the sleeping girl, then to the sky as she sighed silently. She felt a tugging on her wrist, beckoning her forward.
“Come on, Amby. Let’s not keep the world waiting” He stated. Amberlin rolled her eyes. What was with this guy? She grumbled to herself as she followed along. Nightmare sighed, pulling out a pack of cigarettes. He placed one in his mouth, lighting it calmly. He tossed the pack to Amberlin.
“take one. It helps ease the pain.” He muttered. Amberlin cast him a glance, taking one. She placed it in her mouth, not touching it beyond that.
“I don’t smoke.” She stated. Nightmare narrowed his eyes, then rolled them as he titled her chin towards him. He snapped his fingers, a flame appearing on the end of his finger. He touched Amberlin’s cigarette then extinguished the flame. He turned away, taking a drag and blowing the smoke into the air.
“You will when you’re around me and you’ve just eaten. Think of it like a tic-tac for your mentality. Trust me, if you want to feed on dreams, nightmares and memories, you’ll definitely want it.” He stated. Amberlin glared at him, moving the smoking stick around in her lips. Nightmare chuckled as he stepped forward, moving onward. Amberlin followed behind him quietly. Nightmare lifted up an arm, holding Amberlin back for a moment. He stared at the store, relaxing.
“I’ll be right back. Until then, wear this jacket. I don’t want you looking like a murder victim” He stated. Amberlin glared at him, tossing her cigarette to the ground and stamping it out.
“Funny, seeing as how it’s your fault I look like this” She growled. Nightmare smirked, stamping his cigarette out as well. He entered the store silently. Amberlin stood there, leaned up against a mail box, watching the people walk by. Everything seemed so strange now… So… different. She sighed, shaking her head. A black and white cat suddenly dashed past her feet.
“Watch out for nightmare” it hissed. Amberlin leapt up, then relaxed, convincing herself that it was all in her mind. Which then lead to many thoughts about her sanity. She sighed, staring up at the sun. For some unknown reason, it seemed brighter and more full of life than usual. Amberlin closed her eyes. Maybe this life wasn’t so bad. That’s when she heard a blood curdling yowl. She flipped her head to face the source and found herself face to face with a cat. The cat stared up at her with it’s large green and yellow eyes, as three flesh coloured scars ran through it‘s eye. The cat yawned lazily as it curled up on the mailbox.
“Don’t trust him.” It muttered, a man’s voice clawing its way out of the cat. Amberlin leapt away, shocked at the cat.
“A-are you a life eater?” She asked. The cat nodded calmly, stretching.
“Yes. My name is Katze” He stated calmly, leaping down to sit by her feet. Amberlin sighed, looking at the door of the shop.
“So why shouldn’t I trust my creator?” She asked. Katze slunk around her feet calmly, stepping on a cigarette butt. He brushed it off his paw, scraping it on the side walk then looked back up at her.
“Simple. He’s the sneakiest of us all. None of us trust him. It’s almost a law not to” He stated, then turned and began to dash off. Amberlin stared at him, confused for a moment then stared up at Nightmare, suddenly at her side. He held up a bag.
“We’re going home so you can change.” He stated. Amberlin nodded, the cat’s words still lingering in her head. But one question that came up louder than the others was a simple one, expected of our heroine.
“Why was he a cat?” She asked herself, taking the bag as she followed her master, her feet moving quickly against the pavement.
